One of the most prominent manufacturers of electric motorcycles, Zero Motorcycles, is recalling a number of 2011-2012 motorcycles due to corroding brake bolts.
Affected motorcycles may be susceptible to corrosion of bolts in the front brake caliper mounting assembly.
This corrosion could cause cracking and possible fracture–potentially leading the bolts to come loose and interfere with the front wheel, increasing the risk of the wheel locking and causing an accident.
Filed under NHTSA campaign number 13V329000, the recall notice states that 268 units are potentially affected.
Zero Motorcycles will notify owners of potentially affected motorcycles, and dealers will replace the front caliper bolts from around mid-August. Owners can also contact the NHTSA hotline on 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
Zero has been making electric motorcycles since 2006, and continual tweaks have seen them improve in both performance and range.
One Zero rider has covered more than 40,000 miles in cross-country trips over the United States on his own 2012 Zero ZF9. Several Zero motorcycles also appeared at this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb event, setting more than a few records and taking class victories.
