It may not be available in the northernmost of the 50 states, but the 2011 Chevrolet Volt is no stranger to Alaska.
Last winter, a team of engineers from Chevrolet spent many weeks in the frigid north to see how well its range-extended plug-in hybrid would fare with the extreme cold and heavy snowfall.  It passed with flying colors.
While driving the famous Dalton Highway in the middle of the Arctic winter might not be everyone’s idea of a fun road trip, very few could resist the summer charms of an Alaskan road-trip.
Enter photographer, geek and consultant John Biehler. A fan of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, he was invited by GM Canada up to Alaska to try out the 2011 Chevrolet Volt ahead of its Canadian launch.
No-stranger to the car, Biehler got a chance to get behind the wheel of both a pre-production prototype Volt back in June last year as well as a little time in a production Volt at SXSW earlier this year in Austin, TX.
“I’m actually a target consumer for the Volt,” writes Biehler on his blog. “My current commute is just under 70 kilometers [43 miles] roundtrip [each day].”
But in his Alaskan adventure, Biehler got to drive a little more than his daily Vancouver commute. Instead, he got to drive 130 miles from Anchorage to Seward Alaska, skirting state and national parks on his trip along Alaskan Highway 1.
While it’s unlikely he could see Russia to the west nor Sarah Palin’s home town of Wasilla to the northeast Biehler took his camera along to record the beautiful snow-capped mountains, miles of wilderness and beautiful alaskan summer sun.
It’s unlikely there were many places to plug-in en-route, but both car and driver safely arrived in Seward, as the time-lapse video below shows.
If you want to retrace his steps though, you may be in for a wait: Alaska isn’t expected to get the Chevrolet Volt until the end of this year.
