2011 Nissan Leaf
While it’s not quite the thundering herd that lined up for the new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro–or even the Apple iPad–Nissan says it has a healthy crowd of people interested in owning the 2011 Nissan Leaf electric car.
The 2011 Leaf will be the first mass-market electric car sold in America in the modern era when it goes on sale this fall in a handful of markets.
The Detroit Free Press reports Nissan has logged more than 6,600 orders for the compact hatchback electric vehicle through its website. Last week, the automaker announced that interested shoppers who registered for early access could place a $99 reservation for their own 2011 Leaf.
Details to those hand-raisers–which include this owner of a 2004 Toyota Prius–will be distributed by June 30.
Nissan plans to begin selling the Leaf in some markets by December. The first group of sales are likely to come to drivers in California, Washington, D.C., and Oregon, with other markets getting theirs in early 2011.
Prices start from $32,780, but the Federal government has tossed in a $7,500 tax credit; states like Georgia and California are offering $5,000 tax benefits to buyers, along with credits for the purchase and installation of charging stations for the 100-mile-range EV.
