This much we know already: Tesla Motors will build battery packs and electric drive systems for the upcoming 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV electric crossover.
What we didn’t know was where that car would be assembled.
Would it be the Canadian factory that builds standard gasoline RAV4s for North America, or the cavernous Tesla Motors plant in Fremont, California, where the electric-car startup plans to build its 2012 Model S all-electric luxury sports sedan?
Today we learned the answer.
Toyota issued a statement saying that the “jointly developed” RAV4 EV would be built in its plant in Woodstock, Ontario, starting next year.
An unspecified number of electric powertrains will be built by Tesla Motors at its Palo Alto, California, headquarters and shipped to the Toyota plant in Canada. The value of the deal is roughly $100 million.
“The Tesla-Toyota joint development team has agreed that building the vehicle at the Woodstock plant on the same line as the gasoline-powered RAV4,” said Ray Tanguay, chairman of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, “will streamline and simplify the production process and guarantee the highest level of quality control.”
