Well, if this is the guy who’s actually going to buy a 2014 Cadillac ELR, there may be some interesting conversations to come with Nissan Leaf owners.
This ELR driver is a hard-charging, self-assured, contemptuous-of-vacations, modern-home-owning middle-aged white male, as portrayed in a recent video for the new luxury range-extended electric coupe.
We just wonder whether he’s the kind of person who’s going to listen to opposing viewpoints–and whether he has the slightest interest in greener cars.

The “Poolside” video appeared on Cadillac’s YouTube channel on Friday, and has already racked up close to 20,000 views.
And indeed, perhaps this character is Cadillac’s target buyer: a self-made, affluent family man with the confidence to voice his opinions (as well as his apparent contempt for Europeans who take the month of August off).

He’s a “crazy, driven, hard-working believer, that’s why” … someone who’s made of “the same stuff as the Wright Brothers, and Bill Gates, and Les Paul,” and Muhammad Ali.
That’s what led us to go to the moon, he says–where we quickly “got bored, so we left.” But we “left the keys” in the lunar rover, since “we’re the only ones going back up there.”
And the “stuff” that wealth lets you buy (presumably including the pricey Cadillac coupe)?
“That’s the upside of only taking two weeks off in August, n’est-ce pas?”
Ummmmmm … OK.
Is this guy–or people like him, or people who want to be him–likely to buy a Cadillac ELR?
The ELR’s $76,000 price–although the first 1,000 buyers will get a free home charging station and installation thrown in–certainly means the car won’t be bought by those looking to save money by driving on grid power.
Nor is it as practical as the Tesla Model S, which can accommodate at least four adults and a considerable amount of their luggage to boot. The undoubtedly above-average kids in the video aren’t likely to be happy in the ELR’s minimal back seat.

That the self-assured executive is played by actor Neil McDonough–who has played any number of not-very-nice people in multiple movies and TV shows–only adds to the odd tone of the ad.
But what do electric-car owning readers think of the video?
Do you know people like this? Would you want to hang out with the guy? Do you think people with his points of view are likely to buy a plug-in electric car?
