By now, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the 2016 Audi A3 e-tron plug-in hybrid is missing in action.
When Audi unveiled the U.S. version of its compact hatchback with a plug more than a year ago, at the New York Auto Show in April 2014, the planned arrival date was the summer of 2015.
That long wait now appears to have lengthened a bit more.

The A3 e-tron now won’t arrive in dealerships until October 2015 2016, according to information obtained by AutoSpies.
The website cites a purported Audi document that lists when various new 2016 models will arrive in U.S. ports.
While the first 2016 versions of some Audi models are already arriving in the U.S., the roster says the A3 e-tron won’t hit our shores until the tenth month of this year.

The first examples will likely turn up in showrooms a few weeks after that.
While all other versions of the A3 are sold in the U.S. only as four-door sedans, the e-tron will be available solely as a Sportback five-door hatchback (the more popular body style for the A3 in Europe).
Its powertrain consists of a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine and six-speed dual-clutch transmission, with an electric motor and 8.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack.

Combined output is pegged at 204 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, which powers the front wheels.
Audi claims that’s enough to propel the A3 e-tron from 0 to 62 mph in 7.6 seconds.
It can also reach a top speed of just under 138 mph in hybrid mode, or 80 mph in electric mode.

The A3 e-tron has been on sale in Europe since late 2014, priced at 37,900 euros (about $42,052) in Audi’s home market of Germany.
U.S. pricing and EPA fuel-economy figures will be released closer to the car’s launch here.
It likely won’t be long before the A3 e-tron is joined by a second Audi plug-in hybrid in the U.S.

That would be the Q7 e-tron SUV, which was unveiled with a diesel hybrid powertrain at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.
The U.S. version is expected to use a gasoline engine in place of the diesel, although Audi hasn’t released details on that yet.
