We now have details on the production version of the X5 plug-in hybrid SUV that BMW has shown numerous times in prototype form.
The 2016 BMW X5 xDrive 40e will debut at the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show next month, and is expected to go on sale in the U.S. before the end of the year.

Like the Concept X5 eDrive that first appeared at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, the production version is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine and eight-speed automatic transmission with an electric motor, which together drive all four wheels.
The gasoline engine produces 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the electric motor is rated at 82 kilowatts (111 hp), with 184 lb-ft of torque.

BMW rates the powertrain’s combined output at 309 hp and 331 lb-ft.
(Simply adding the individual figures together doesn’t work because of the two units’ differing power curves.)
In hybrid mode, BMW estimates the X5 xDrive 40e will do 0 to 62 mph in 6.8 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 130 mph.

Fuel economy is estimated at 83.1 mpg, although this is a blended number using the very optimistic European testing cycle.
In addition, the SUV’s 9-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack can provide up to 19 miles of electric-only driving at speeds up to 75 mph, BMW says.
Those numbers are from the European tests, and U.S. EPA ratings will differ.

Besides powering the vehicle, the battery pack is also used to charge the X5’s 12-volt electrical accessory system through a transformer.
Recharging takes three hours, 50 minutes, from a standard household socket.
Owners can also opt for a BMW i Wallbox Pure charging station, which cuts the time to two hours, 45 minutes.

X5 xDrive 40e drivers will be able to get the ChargeNow card already offered to drivers of BMW “i” vehicles, which provides access to public charging stations on the ChargePoint network.
As in many other hybrid vehicles, there are also multiple driving modes to choose from.
In Auto eDrive mode, the car makes use of both power sources in what it deems the most efficient way possible.

Max eDrive engages electric power only, while Save Battery builds up a charge for later use.
These modes can also be combined with the Comfort, Sport, and Eco Pro, driving settings found in other BMWs.
Eco Pro allows for coasting when the drive lifts off the accelerator pedal.

The 2016 BMW X5 xDrive 40e will be built in Spartanburg, South Carolina, alongside other variants of the X5, as well as BMW’s other utility vehicles.
Sales are to begin this fall. Expect pricing and EPA fuel-economy information closer to that date.
