With little morethan three weeks to go until the 2016 Chevrolet Volt is revealed, its maker is dribbling out more tantalizing details on the all-new car.
The latest is a YouTube video published yesterday that shows two members of the development team–familiar faces to Volt fans–demonstrating a new function.

That’s the ability for a driver to change the degree of regenerative braking, depending on how much is needed to recapture maximum energy while slowing the car.
First offered on the 2014 Cadillac ELR, the pricey and low-selling range-extended electric luxury coupe, the regeneration is controlled by paddles built into the back of the steering wheel.

At highway speeds, a driver may not need maximum deceleration, and might leave the regen at its default setting.
But around town, to recapture as much energy as possible, a driver might increase the regen to its maximum setting to minimize the need to use the brake pedal.

That’s discussed on the video by GM product chief Mark Reuss and Volt team leader Andrew Farah. Reuss calls the Volt’s implementation “even more refined” than that of the ELR.
Such “one-pedal driving” can be found at its most aggressive in the original Tesla Roadster and the current BMW i3.

Many other electric cars mimic the behavior of a conventional automatic transmission car, perhaps offering only one higher-regen setting.
The new range-extended electric Volt is expected to offer more range, higher fuel efficiency, a quieter and smoother drive, and perhaps some accommodations for a fifth seat.
It will use a more powerful 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and both its motor-generators can now power the car, unlike the previous version.

Chevy has not released specifications for the performance of the car or its powertain, however.
Oh, and as for that fifth seat?
Much of the interior of the 2016 Volt shown in the video is shrouded with black mats, and there’s no camera angle that reveals what’s behind the occupants of the two front seats.

For that, we’ll have to wait a few more weeks, it seems. The 2016 Chevrolet Volt will be formally unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show on Monday, January 12.
