A bit more of the styling of the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Volt has been revealed, in photos that Chevy released from a sneak preview of the car last night for current Volt owners in Los Angeles.
The range-extended electric car will be revealed in its entirety at the Detroit Auto Show in January, but now the world can see what the car will look like from the front.

Visually, the 2016 Volt appears to have a slightly lower nose than the current model, with a larger lower grille in the bumper and a slimmer upper grille–both with the Volt’s characteristic silver patterned blanking plate.
The blue Volt in the photos clearly shows an aileron to smooth airflow at the lower corner of the front end, just above what appears to be a black rubber air dam under the front fascia.

And the headlight unit is clearly more swept-back than on the current car, with a prominent center line giving the grilles a chevron shape as they wrap around the rounded nose.
Overall, the new Volt’s styling–or what’s visible of it–appears to bear a strong relationship to current Chevrolet design themes used in the Impala full-size sedan and other cars.

Separately, Chevrolet released more details on modifications it’s made to the onboard charging system of the 2016 Volt.
Owners will now be able to designate a “home” charging location, which the car will recognize based on GPS data.

This will let owners designate a set of charging behavior for regular charging at home, including a level of 8 or 12 Amps, a delayed start time to take advantage of special overnight rates, a departure time for each day of the week, and other specifics.
Chevy has also updated the charge-status indicators and tones.
The charge-status light on top of the dash will show the approximate charge level through a series of flashes, letting owners see at a glance about how much the car has recharged so far.

A specific tone indicates charging has begun, with a separate tone for delayed charging. There’s also a tone that indicates a charge-port door left open that sounds before the owner gets into the vehicle.
An illuminated charging port that lights up when the door is opened will be an option on the 2016 Volt, Chevy said.

Finally, Chevy has redesigned the portable charging-cord set, and created a new storage bin specifically to hold it on the left side of the rear cargo area.
That means the cord is no longer stows underneath the load floor, which often requires owners to unload cargo before retrieving the cord.
The cord is also now 25 feet long, and the unit can be locked with a small padlock to prevent unauthorized removal while the car is unattended.

These changes, Chevrolet says, were made in response to feedback from Volt owners.
The Volt, the company has said, is “the most studied car in our history,” using owner surveys and panels along with data aggregated from tens of thousands of Volts whose owners gave GM permission to track the car’s usage.
