We already knew that at some point, the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV electric car would get a European-market twin, to be called the 2017 Opel Ampera-e.
The Ampera-e project was announced by GM CEO Mary Barra back in February. Now, Opel has confirmed that it will make its public debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show in late September.
The car is essentially a Bolt EV re-branded as an Opel for the European market, an example of what’s known as “badge engineering” in the industry.

The name is recycled from the previous generation of Opel Ampera (minus the “-e”), a badge-engineered version of the first-generation Chevy Volt.
Like the Bolt EV, the Ampera-e is powered by a 150-kilowatt (200-horsepower) electric motor, which also produces 266 pound-feet of torque.
GM previously quoted a 0 to 60 mph time of “under 7.0 seconds” for the Bolt EV, and it’s likely the Ampera-e will offer similar performance.

Discussing the Opel, GM would only say that the European-market car will do 0 to 50 kph (0 to 31 mph) in 3.2 seconds.
Interestingly, while GM listed a 91-mph top speed for the Bolt EV, it quoted a slightly higher maximum of 150 kph—or 93 mph—for the Ampera-e.
Range will presumably be similar for the Opel as well, although GM did not quote a specific figure.

GM promises a 200-mile range for the Bolt EV in the U.S., though the rated range for the Ampera-e will likely be higher under the more generous test cycles used by the region’s NEDC protocol.
Since March, the Bolt EV has been in pilot production at the Orion Assembly plant in Orion Township, Michigan, which currently builds Sonic small cars for GM.
It’s likely that the Orion plant will also build the Ampera-e for export to Europe.

GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant built the previous Ampera alongside its Chevy Volt sibling.
While GM moves ahead with plans to sell the Ampera-e alongside the Bolt EV, it’s unclear whether the carmaker will also introduce a second-generation Ampera as a sibling to the current Volt—though insiders are skeptical.

It doesn’t appear that GM will sell right-hand drive versions of the Ampera-e in the U.K., where Opel models are typically re-badged as Vauxhalls.
Press days for the 2016 Paris Motor Show are September 29 and 30.
