The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq lineup was largely downplayed by European media that focused more on local makers, along with the supercars and high-end luxury vehicles debuts, at this week’s Geneva Motor Show.
Korean maker Hyundai was the 19th press event of the morning, almost three hours after media days kicked off at 7:45 am on Tuesday morning.
But after the hoopla subsided, we got the chance to go back and spend more time with each of the three cars–the Ioniq Hybrid, Electric, and Plug-In.

What follows are our notes, a few overall and the rest broken down by each individual model.
While it’s low, the Ioniq can hold four North American-sized adults with relative ease. There’s just enough leg room in back for a six-footer to sit with knees splayed even if the driver’s seat is all the way back.
And the rear-seat headroom is suitable for the same six-footer, without the seat being so close to the floorpan that rear-seat riders are forced into a knees-up stance.

That’s because all three Ioniqs use the space under the rear seat and load bay for some combination of battery pack and gasoline tank, depending on model.
The interior is just this side of plain, but typical of Hyundais, it’s straightforward and easy to use without extensive training.
Each of three cars we saw, in European spec, has a different wheel design, with blue accents to differentiate the alloy wheels of the Ioniq Electric from those of the Hybrid and Plug-In.

Hyundai Ioniq Electric
The electric version has a more Space Age-looking drive selector on its console than the hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions; we’ll wait to drive it before we pass judgment
The battery pack itself is not under the floorpan, but only under the rear seat and load bay
In fact, that battery looks surprisingly similar to the one used in the low-volume Kia Soul EV sold by Hyundai’s sister brand

The Soul EV pack delivers a range of 93 miles combined from the same 28 kilowatt-hours, so the lower, sleeker, and more aerodynamic Ioniq should crack the 100-mile barrier–but by how much?
The charging port is located under the “gas door” location on the left-rear fender
On the European-spec cars displayed, it included not only 240-Volt charging (“Level 2” in North America) but also the DC quick-charging connector for the Combined Charging System (CCS) standard

Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid
The hybrid will be the best-selling Ioniq globally by far, Hyundai says, and consequently it has more conventional controls

We were impressed by the long slot on the console, which appears to be deep enough to fit a tablet or a slim laptop as well as today’s larger mobile phones
The simulated rear-pillar window looks best on the white show cars, but we wonder if the car will look much blockier when painted in a dark color, which would cause the “window” to vanish with only its chrome outline remaining

Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In
The charging port for the Plug-In is on the left front fender, generally the location preferred by owners in left-hand-drive markets
There is no DC quick-charging on the plug-in version
Its electric-motor output falls between those of the Hybrid and the Electric, at 45 kw (60 hp), and the Ioniq Plug-In uses the same 1.6-liter engine and six-speed dual-clutch transmission as the Ioniq Hybrid
