Toyota was shy on specifics when it unveiled the redesigned 2016 Prius hybrid in Las Vegas last month.
But at an event in Japan this week, the carmaker was more generous with details on the upcoming fourth-generation Prius.
The company used this event to reveal information on the Prius’ powertrain technology, as well as the trim levels that will be available (in Japan, at least).

Additional specifications–including dimensions and the power outputs of the Prius’ gasoline engine and electric motor–were soon also released on the company’s Japanese media site.
Toyota also confirmed that it will offer an electric all-wheel drive system, called E-Four.
The previously-rumored system adds an electric motor to the rear axle, providing assistance when extra traction is needed.

The 2016 Prius will have a length of 4,450 millimeters (175.1 inches), width of 1,760 mm (69.2), and height of 1,470 mm (57.8 inches, E-Four models will ride slightly higher), according to Toyota.
That makes the new Prius slightly shorter, wider, and lower than the outgoing model.
Coefficient of drag is estimated at 0.24, compared to 0.25 for a 2015 Prius Liftback (although drag measurements from different manufacturers may not be directly comparable).

Toyota says the nose and the rearmost section of the cowl and hood have been lowered, to improve visibility and give the Prius a sleeker look.
Beneath that lowered hood, Toyota says the Prius’ 1.8-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine will produce 96 horsepower and 104 pound-feet of torque.
The electric motor will produce 53 kilowatts (71 hp), and 120 lb-ft.

Toyota did not provide a combined output figure, however, and simply adding the gasoline and electric output figures together doesn’t really work, because of differences in torque curves.
In addition, the carmaker reiterated its claims of improved handling from a new double-wishbone suspension system, and use of the stiffer Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform.
Toyota also claims the 2016 Prius will be offered with more technology features, including a new infotainment system and a suite of electronic safety systems.

While EPA fuel-economy ratings haven’t been released yet, engineers have said they expect to achieve a rating 10 percent higher than the previous version.
That would mean an EPA-rated 55 mpg combined.
Toyota has also said that it will offer an even more efficient Prius Eco model, but further details have not been released.
