In August, the Chevy Volt won the Canadian plug-in sales derby yet again – a category dominance that brings to mind the Ford F-150’s 48-year-reign(!) atop truck sales, in the land of the Maple Leaf.
Funnily enough, it’s actually the French fleur-de-lis which is responsible for these victories: Fully three-quarters of all Volts sold in Canada this year–745 of 963, or 77 percent of sales through July, based on registration data–have been sold in Quebec, despite the province only hosting one-quarter of the country’s population.

No doubt on the strength of its Quebec dominance, the Volt finished August with 186 sales, its fourth-best monthly showing. This is a healthy jump from July’s 132 units and in line with the past four months, which averaged about 170 sales each.
In mid-September, Chevrolet is likely to celebrate the extended-range electric vehicle beating its full-year sales record of 1,225 cars; its tally as of end-August is 1,149 vehicles.

The Nissan Leaf, meanwhile, enjoyed another fine month in August, though sales dipped slightly to 113 from 117 the month before. Seven of the Leaf’s eight best sales months have occurred this year, and the past four months have delivered Nissan its four best-ever monthly sales totals up north.
Based on the past three months, BMW is likely to have moved about 40 i3’s in Canada in August – the i3 data takes a bit longer to come out, and wasn’t available at time of writing.
Readers may be interested to know that in Canada, the split between the electric and range-extended i3’s is almost exactly 50/50, while the ratio is thought to be closer to 40/60 in the United States.
Among lower-volume vehicles, the Cadillac ELR and Mitsubishi i-MiEV found 10 buyers each, and Toyota sold another Prius Plug-In Hybrid.
July vehicle registration roundup
The Smart Electric Drive continued its strong summer momentum, with 79 new vehicle registrations in August. From May through July, about one-third of new Smarts in Canada have been electric (205 of 638)–a bit higher than the ratio in America in the same time frame, which is 782 out of 2,713.
The Tesla Model S had a slower-than-usual month (48 sales), perhaps connected to the company’s planned shutdown to retool for the Model X.
While August sales could be slow as Tesla restarts its production line, we might expect some bumper sales months in September and October, when the company is finally able to catch up with outstanding orders.
Ford, meanwhile, added another 5 Focus Electrics (Focii?) to Canadian roads. While such numbers might seem modest in the big picture, perhaps the F-150 had humble beginnings of its own, half a century or so ago.
