We know the official release of the 2014 Cadillac ELR electric car will be on Monday, January 15, at the Detroit Auto Show.
Now Cadillac has released a teaser image of the range-extended electric coupe, which is based on a modified version of the Voltec powertrain used in the Chevrolet Volt hatchback.
Like most shadowy teaser shots, this one shows dramatically highlighted body shape and not much else.
Cadillac says about its new model only that the ELR “combines dramatic design with industry-leading extended range electric vehicle technology in a unique luxury coupe.”
The 2014 Cadillac ELR is based on the Cadillac Converj concept car that was first unveiled in January 2009 at the Detroit Auto Show.
During 2009, General Motors [NYSE:GM] approved it for production, but then killed the project barely two months later.
With Chevy Volt sales slow to take off during 2011,GM executives looked for ways to boost plug-in car production at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant, including additional Voltec models.
In August 2011, production of the Converj was greenlighted for the second time–as this site was the first to report, before GM confirmed the news the following week.
With a price likely to be north of $40,000 and the usual Cadillac luxury features–potentially including the CUE touchscreen control system that’s received mixed reviews–the ELR will have to perform better in several ways than the Volt on which it’s based.
No technical details have been released as yet, though some sources suggest it will have an updated version of the Volt’s 16-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack and possibly a more powerful 2.0-liter four-cylinder range extender.
