Just over a year ago, we told you about a call for entrants to formally apply to take part in a potential all-electric race car series called Formula E.
Yesterday, the Federation Internatonale de l’Automobile confirmed the  race series would go ahead, with the inaugural race season now scheduled to start in 2014. 
According to the official press release, the FIA has agreed to license the commercial rights of the FIA Formula E championship to a consortium of international investors making up Formula E Holdings Ltd.
Like Formula 1, the races will take place in multiple countries over the course of 2014, with a planned 10 teams and 20 drivers. 
For the initial season, competitors will be given the option to race a pre-built electric race car developed by French automaker Formulec.

With a top speed of 150 mph, a 0-60 time of 3 seconds, and looks right out of the Indy 500, the Formulec EF01 will be able to run for 25 minutes on a single charge, meaning the 1-hour races will require drivers swap cars — or battery packs — as quickly as possible. 
We’ll have to wait a little longer to find out more details about the series, but there is one more tiny snippet Formula E Holdings has shared about the all-new race series.
Rio de Janeiro, recent host of the G20 summit, has become the first city to volunteer itself as a host for the all-electric race series.
