With a cause swiftly identified for a recent fire, 1,000 sales out of about 2,000 cars built , and promising European volume, Fisker has come through some rough water lately.
Now, the company can focus on its next cars: the Surf shooting brake and Sunset retractable hardtop coupe derivatives of its Karma four-door sedan.
Right?
Well, no.
High Gear Media’s Marty Padgett chatted with Russell Datz, Fisker’s director of corporate communications, at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this past weekend.
He asked specifically about launch dates for the Surf and the Sunset.
The answer was unexpected: Both models are on the back burner.
Instead, Fisker Automotive’s entire product focus has shifted to the lower-cost, higher-volume Atlantic mid-size sedan.
The two concepts were unveiled at last fall’s Frankfurt Motor Show and way back at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, respectively.

The Atlantic appeared at the New York Auto Show in April this year.
In a followup exchange, Roger Ormisher, Fisker’s senior director of global corporate communications and public relations, confirmed the switch.
“Currently, those cars are on the back burner,” Ormisher said, “and all our resource and focus is being directed to the Atlantic.”
Why the change in focus? “That is the volume car that represents Fisker’s best future path.”
As of now, he said, no timeframe has been decided for the launch of Surf, Sunset, or both models.
So if you want a range-extended electric powertrain in a sleek five-door wagon or a convertible coupe, you’re going to have to wait a while.
