In just under a week, electric vehicle owners in Los Angeles will be find that owning an electric car will have got a lot easier.
As part of a program recently announced by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, residents of the city will be able to fast-track applications to install electric vehicle charging stations in their homes, receiving a decision in just seven days.
Not only that, but those in receipt of a ‘permit to plug’ can also apply for up to $2,000 in tax rebates to cover the cost of installing electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) in their home.
The incentives make Los Angeles one of the quickest and cheapest places in the U.S. to install domestic electric car charging stations.
The scheme will be run in collaboration with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), and does come with certain stipulations.
Firstly, the rebate is only available to LADWP residential customers who install an approved Level 2 EVSE unit complete with J1772 plug, as found on the 2011 Nissan Leaf, 2011 Chevrolet Volt and 2012 Ford Focus.
This eliminates owners of the 2011 Tesla Roadster, which currently uses a charging plug unique to the Tesla.
Secondly, those wishing to apply for the rebate must be customers of LADWP who are willing to have a separate dedicated meter connected to the EVSE unit.
To find out more about the Los Angeles electric vehicle program, head to LAWDP’s specialist webpage detailing permits, rebates and where to go for more information.
