Audi solar powered EV charging stationAudi is demonstrating the use of solar energy for future mobility by converting the roof of one of its factories in Ingolstadt, Germany to solar panels. Here, Audi e-tron models will in future have their batteries charged with current obtained directly from the photovoltaic equipment installed on the roof.
If you have been living under a rock for the past year, Audi uses the e-tron name for its electric vehicles, the first of which will be the R8 e-tron due in 2012. Similar to its quattro labeling, Audi’s new electric vehicles will wear an e-tron badge, signifying that the cars are running an electric motor(s) instead of a conventional internal combustion engine.
It’s a well known fact that electric vehicles, like the future e-tron range, produce zero-emissions, but what isn’t that well known is the fact that much of the electricity used to power these so-called green vehicles comes from the burning of fossil fuels in power stations.
This is why Audi is tackling the problem head on, demonstrating that electric vehicles can be true zero-emission vehicles. The photovoltaic installation at the Ingolstadt factory uses innovative thin-layer modules that satisfy the most stringent environmental protection, efficiency and flexibility standards.
Approximately 460 MWh of electricity can be obtained from this new installation, enough to satisfy the annual needs of around 180 households.
