Earlier this week Californian start-up Aptera unveiled its official pre-production prototype for its upcoming 2e electric vehicle, along with many of the specs for the final full-production model to come in about 11 months–once the final financing hurdle is cleared that is.
There will be several different versions of the car, including an all-electric model and a range-extending plug-in hybrid. The first model in production will be the all-electric version, which will go from 0-60 mph in 10 seconds, top out at 90 mph and get the equivalent of more than 200 mpg based on a standard EPA driving cycle.
Driving the wheels will be an electric motor supplied by Remy, which should see the Aptera 2e cover a distance of more than 200 miles on a single charge of its lithium-ion batteries.
Aptera said they chose the Remy electric motor for the superior technology, reliability and speed to market the motor offers. Additionally, Remy’s patented technology provides cooling efficiency that permits the Aptera 2e to run at higher speeds longer than other motors.
The all-electric Aptera 2e will have an estimated cost between $25,000 and $45,000 and should be available in showrooms early next year.
About a year after the all-electric version goes into production, a plug-in hybrid model will become the second Aptera to go on sale. It is designed with a 40 mile electric-only range, beyond which it relies on a range-extending engine as a generator for the batteries. It therefore can provide identical fuel economy to the all-electric model for trips up to 40 miles, but as trips go beyond that mark, fuel efficiency diminishes until at about 350-400 miles it has fallen to the equivalent of about 130 mpg.
