With mass produced electric vehicles scheduled to come to Australia by next year and a full lineup of EVs scheduled to reach the country by 2012, charging stations will quickly become a necessity throughout the country.  Coulomb Technologies is hoping to step in early and install its ChargePoint system nationwide ahead of the launch of incoming vehicles.

Coulomb Technologies has signed ChargePoint Pty Ltd to an exclusive distribution agreement throughout Australia.  The company will offer is ChargePoint Networked Charging Station throughout the country and is working with various local governments and utility companies to begin several pilot projects in major cities.  Coulomb is in discussion with cities such as Perth, Sydney, and Melbourne to plan the roll-out of a pilot charging project.  The company plans to begin the pilot projects within the first half of next year.

As with other pilot projects underway from Coulomb, the projects main goals include determining reliability of the grid, determining consumer usage and behavior and determining additional environmental and societal impact related to charging electric vehicles.

Coulomb Technologies firmly believes that Australia will be a strong, growing market for EV technology. “We are excited about bringing Coulomb ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations to Australia and the opportunity to partner with ChargePoint Pty Ltd Australia,” said Richard Lowenthal, the Chief Executive Officer of Coulomb Technologies. “We firmly believe Australia will grow to become one of our key markets when electric cars really take off.”

The ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations are found across the globe.  Coulomb and Chargepoint have combined on countless occasions in an attempt to bring the necessary EV infrastructure to countries with EV vehicles slated in the near future.  With an infrastructure in place, Coulomb and ChargePoint believe that EVs will reach a mass market and entry into this market at the beginning is a key to success in the industry.

Exclusive Australian Distributor, ChargePoint Pty Ltd, Brings Networked Charging Stations for Electric Vehicles to Australia

CAMPBELL, Calif., November 9, 2009 Coulomb Technologies, the leader in networked electric vehicle charging stations today announced it has signed ChargePoint Pty Ltd to an exclusive distribution agreement in Australia.

ChargePoint Pty Ltd now offers Coulomb’s ChargePoint® Networked Charging Stations throughout Australia and is currently in advanced discussions with a number of government and private sector partners for pilot projects in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne which are all due to commence in the first half of 2010. The pilot projects will be used to evaluate charging behavior, energy grid load analysis and environmental and societal impacts.

The first mass produced electric vehicles will arrive in Australia in 2010. Most manufacturers expected to release models in 2012, which will create demand for ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations in the local market.

“ChargePoint Pty Ltd is enabling consumers and partners to be part of the electric car revolution in Australia by providing convenient plug-in facilities and services,” said Luke Grana, Chief Executive Officer of ChargePoint Pty Ltd.  “Coulomb Technologies is the only company we have found that has examined every facet of electric vehicle charging technology and developed the most comprehensive solution for partners. We are proud to have entered into this exclusive partnership to implement their technology in our market.”

Senior Research Fellow in smart grids and electric vehicles from Curtin University in West Australia, Dr. Andrew Simpson, says not only will consumers benefit from electric vehicle transportation, this technology will also improve the management of network loads for energy providers.

“Numerous studies have shown that there is the capacity for many electric vehicles to charge at off-peak times which can utilize grid assets more-effectively. This means cheap energy can be sold to electric motorists through infrastructure such as the ChargePoint® Network.

“There is a heightened awareness that electric transport is the way forward – electric cars are more sustainable, they will be affordable and can potentially emit zero emissions. The increasing support of governments, energy companies and consumers will result in the rapid expansion of this market in the coming years,” he said.
