Kia Motors Corporation debut its EcoDynamics sub-brand line of vehicles at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week.  According to the company, the EcoDynamics line of vehicles is a name given to the most eco-friendly version of each model within its range.  Within the EcoDynamics is the new Sorento Hybrid which made its official debut at the opening of the show.
Though many of the products in the EcoDynamics lineup simply consist of advanced four cylinder, fuel efficient gasoline engines, several of the models within this new lineup of vehicles are powered by hybrid technology.
According to Kia, more vehicles are in the work for the EcoDynamics lineup including alternative fuel systems, hybrids, electrics, and fuel cell powered vehicles.  For now, Kia has introduced three hybrids that are part of the new sub brand.  The hybrids include the Forte LPI Hybrid, the Cee’d Hybrid, and the newly redesigned Sorento Hybrid displaying some of Kia’s breakthrough hybrid technology.
The Forte LPI Hybrid, powered by an electric motor and liquefied petroleum went on sale in Korea this year, but will soon begin a testing program in Europe next year.  36 vehicles will be leased in Europe to see the feasibility of large scale commercialization.
The Cee’d Hybrid, is similar in powertrain to the Forte, but combines the electric motor with a gasoline powered engine.
Perhaps the biggest news coming from Kia is the Sorento Hybrid.  The redesigned Sorento features Kia’s new 1.6 liter diesel engine with twin turbos generating 163hp and paired with an electric motor.  Power goes to the ground through a new double clutch automatic trans with sequential manual capability.  According to Kia, this powertrain will allow the vehicle to display exception performance while only emitting 119 grams of CO2 per km.
Look for Kia to introduce several new models within the EcoDynamics lineup over the next few years and the company races to catch up with other automakers with production of advanced technology vehicles.
