Ever since Audi unveiled the A5 Hybrid Quattro SUV at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, we have to admit to being a little excited about seeing it reach the U.S. market.
Now, Audi has given us a little more insight into the model, due to hit the U.S. some time this year as a 2013 year model.
Essentially a mid-cycle update, the regular 2013 Audi Q5 SUV looks similar to the 2012 Audi Q5, but with four new body colors and updated grille, bumpers and rear exhaust pipes.
Inside, changes remain minimal too, with improved controls for seat heating, a more efficient air conditioning system, and easier-to-use drive selector.
Although it hasn’t been sold in the U.S. before, the Audi Q5 Hybrid Quattro will benefit from the same modifications as the rest of the Q5 range, but with unique ten-spoke alloy wheels, body-color bumper and the added benefits of a parallel hybrid drivetrain.
Powered by the combination of a 2.0-liter direct-injection, turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a 40 kilowatt electric motor, the Q5 Hybrid Quattro can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 7.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 139 mph.
With all-wheel drive, Audi claims the Q5 Hybrid Quattro gives V-6 performance, but at a much reduced fuel consumption.
Alongside a hybrid fuel economy of 34 mpg (US) combined, the Q5 Hybrid Quattro can be driven in all-electric mode for up to 1.8 miles if driven at an average speed of 37 mph.
Unlike many other hybrids however, the Q5 Hybrid Quattro can be driven at a maximum speed of 62 mph in electric-only mode, until its 1.3 kilowatt-hour air-cooled lithium-ion battery pack has been emptied.
Although most hybrids come with continuously-variable transmission, the 2013 Q5 Hybrid Quattro will come with an eight-speed tiptronic transmission.
Without the need for a torque converter, the system is compact enough to house the electric motor without compromising space, while a multi-plate clutch automatically engages engine and electric motor as required.
With a choice of three modes: Electric, Drive and Sport, the 2013 Audi Q5 Hybrid Quattro gives the driver the choice between economical or sporty performance.
Audi has yet to announce official pricing for the 2013 Q5 Hybrid Quattro, but when it does, we’ll be sure to report it.
