You might call it pure propaganda, but confident young BMW worker Mirco Schwarze describes the process of assembling the BMW ActiveE electric car in a way that makes it all quite palatable.
The short video below, barely longer than a minute, shows the BMW 1-Series assembly line at the carmaker’s Leipzig plant, which is becoming its manufacturing center for all-electric vehicles.
The BMW i3 (nee MegaCity Vehicle), the carbon-fiber all-electric urban car it will launch in 2013, will be built at Leipzig. And so is the ActiveE, the first-ever all-electric vehicle to wear the BMW rondel.
The ActiveE is the follow-on to the Mini E, but it offers a rear seat, a proper lockable trunk, and the promise of BMW roadholding and performance. Like its predecessor, several hundred copies will be leased for two years to carefully selected test drivers to allow BMW to record real-world data on how electric cars are used.
The BMW ActiveE will be available on lease later this year for $499 per month with $2,250 down. Numbers are limited, however, and many Mini E drivers are expected to switch over to the larger, better engineered four-seat electric coupe.
