While General Motors’ plug-in electric cars are in a bit of a sales lull this fall, the company has an expanding number of plug-in products planned for years to come.
The latest to be uncovered–at least in the planning stages–is an all-electric Cadillac sedan.

The battery-electric sedan is “part of the plan to expand Cadillac’s model range,” according to the brand’s new CEO, Johan de Nysschen, who spoke last week with Reuters.
It will join an updated 2016 Cadillac ELR range-extended electric luxury coupe to be launched at November’s Los Angeles Auto Show, which will be followed by a plug-in hybrid model of the upcoming large CT6 sedan.

Further down the road, Cadillac will have a successor to the ELR as well, using the Voltec electric drive system with range extender. That car, however, may not necessarily be a coupe.
Any all-electric Cadillac sedan would have to have a range of at least 200 miles.

Since Chevrolet has already said it will offer a 200-mile electric car, a pricier Cadillac might well provide somewhat greater range to justify a vastly higher price tag.
It’s becoming clear that a 2017 Chevrolet Sonic EV will be the first 200-mile electric car from GM, although its production volume remains unclear–and possibly as low as 1,800 vehicles, making it a California compliance car.

But de Nysschen also hinted that Cadillac will have a compact sedan, potentially based on the next-generation Chevrolet Cruze, to compete with the Audi A3 and the very successful Mercedes-Benz CLA.
Might Cadillac possibly attempt to create a range-topping large luxury electric sedan to go head-to-head with the Tesla Model S?

Or would it offer a smaller, higher-volume battery-electric model with 200 miles of range to compete with the Tesla Model 3, now projected to launch late in 2017?
At the moment, we can’t say–and GM isn’t talking.
