With Chevrolet on track to complete its rollout of the 2011 Volt range-extended electric car to all 50 states by the end of this year, the carmaker is turning its sites to other countries.
And it’s starting next door in one of the two closest foreign countries to the U.S., one right on our border.
No, not Mexico. It’s Canada. Remember, the very large country of 34 million just north of here?
Chevrolet announced yesterday that certain Chevy dealerships in Canada are now taking orders for the 2012 Volt.
It will be priced (in Canadian dollars) at $41,545, or about $43,740 at today’s exchange rates. That’s 6.7 percent higher than the 2011 U.S. price of $41,000.
Canada
Like the U.S., various incentives are available in Canada to buyers of Volts and other plug-in vehicles.
In Ontario, Volt buyers could receive C$8,230; in Quebec, it’s C$7,769. General Motors expects the 2012 Volt to qualify for both of those incentives.
With large swaths of Canada being very, very lightly populated, Volt sales will start between July and September in a handful of launch markets, just as they did earlier this year in the States.
The first sales locations are in Ontario (Toronto, Oshawa, and the capital region including Ottawa and Gatineau, Quebec); Quebec (Montreal and Quebec City); and British Columbia (Vancouver and Victoria).
Within a year of launch, Chevrolet says, the 2012 Volt will be available throughout Canada.
