In the time it takes you to read this sentence, Larry “Spiderman” McBride set the first 200 mph quarter-mile run on an electric motorcycle.
Crossing the line in 6.94 seconds and at a terminal speed of 201.37 mph, Spiderman and his Lawless Electric Rocket bike have set not only an electric motorcycle record, but an overall electric vehicle record.
The Rocket bike is a joint build project between Lawless Industries and the world-famous Orange County Choppers. It also uses a battery pack built by High Tech Systems.
The numbers are mind-boggling: The battery weighs 250 pounds, and runs at 355 volts, 4,000 amps and 14.2 kWh. The 13-inch GE electric motor develops 1,340 horsepower, more than the Rimac Concept_One electric supercar.
As you can see in the video, the launch only serves to reinforce our view that electric vehicles in motorsports are still hugely exciting. With a vehicle as quiet at idle as the Rocket bike, the huge bang of power and the ripping sound of rubber on asphalt is possibly even more of a shock than when a top fuel dragster launches.
It was clearly no less exciting for the crowd either, who let out a cheer as the numbers appear on the timing screen.
