After travelling to points of interest across the world, the Rolls Royce 102EX, or Phantom Experimental Electric, is finally back home.
It may not be the most realistic proposition for fans of electric cars, but like Tesla, it represents something of a figurehead for the breed and proves that electric power needn’t just be limited to city vehicles.
The 102EX has been shipped around the world virtually non-stop since its unveiling at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show back in March.
Since then, the car has visited Beijing, Dubai, Singapore, Munich, Paris and more – including New York City, where Green Car Reports’ own John Voelcker got behind the wheel to give us his quick drive impressions.
Rolls Royce has used the tour to stimulate debate on whether the full Rolls Royce experience can be delivered when using an electric drivetrain. With tests taking place in a variety of locations, it should also have given the company a chance to find out how well the vehicle operates in different conditions.
The company has been gathering the opinions of press, public and current Rolls Royce owners and the results of its research will be published in the first quarter of 2012.
Electric power might not be the Rolls Royce powerplant of the future, but experiments like the 102EX ensure that when the time comes to move away from internal combustion, the company will still be able to meet the needs and desires of its customers
