Apparently there’s an app for everything–including finding a place to fill up or recharge your alternative-fuel vehicle.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fueling Station Locator is now available as a free iPhone app, Charged EVs reports.
The app is a mobile version of the DOE’s Alternative Fueling Station Locator web site, which lists over 15,000 stations from all over the country.
The database is searchable by zip code, fueling station type, and route. It includes electric-car charging stations, biodiesel, natural gas (CNG and LNG), ethanol (E85) hydrogen, and propane stations.
Drivers can also filter their search with certain parameters, such as the kind of payment method accepted at a station, and whether it is open to the public.
For less well-planned fuel stops, the app also displays addresses, phone numbers, and operating hours for all stations near a user’s current location.
According to the DOE’s Alternative Fuels Data Center, there are currently 12,746 public alternative fueling stations in the United States.
Several states are working to increase that number.
California is getting serious about funding hydrogen filling stations; Governor Jerry Brown recently signed a bill allocating $20 million a year to filling station construction through January 1, 2024.
The Golden State also joined with seven other states to encourage the construction of alternative fueling infrastructure. They are working toward the goal of putting 3.3 million zero-emission vehicles on their roads by 2025.
The Alternative Fueling Station Locator app is currently available for download from the main Locator site, or iTunes.
Android and Windows users can still access a mobile version of the DoE site through their phones’ web browsers.
