The electric-car sales figures for October showed that one single 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf was delivered to a buyer last month,–even though the car hasn’t yet arrived at the VW dealers that will initially offer it.
But that single electric Golf hatchback turns out to be a special case.

Not only is it the first e-Golf to be sold in the U.S., but it was auctioned off by VW to the highest bidder.
And all sales proceeds went to benefit the environmental advocacy group Global Green USA, which advocates for solutions to climate change.

The auction ran for three weeks in October, and the $41,000 winning bid was substantially above the e-Golf’s base price of $36,265
Winner Bruce Oberg is a long time electric-car driver and Volkswagen fan. The white e-Golf will be formally handed over to him at an Oregon dealership on Friday.

In a statement released by VW, Oberg said he was “pleased to support Global Green USA’s work to build a more sustainable future.”
“I love driving EVs,” he continued, “I have enjoyed owning Volkswagens all my life, and I can’t wait to experience the e-Golf for myself.”

He said he was “thrilled that I get to take home one of the first Volkswagen all-electric vehicles.”
The 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf will be launched over the course of the month at selected VW dealers in an initial distribution area limited to California and a handful of Northeastern and coastal states.

Those first launch areas include California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington D.C.
The e-Golf is part of the redesigned seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf range now on sale in the U.S.
The 2015 Volkswagen Golf range is a nominee for Green Car Reports’ 2015 Best Car To Buy award.
