The 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf electric car is coming to the U.S. soon, but getting the very first one will take more than signing on the dotted line at a dealership.
That first car will be auctioned off for charity, with the proceeds going to environmental advocacy group Global Green USA.
The auction is currently live on Charitybuzz.com, and runs through October 29.

With just over two weeks to go, bids are already getting close to the e-Golf’s base price of $36,265 (including destination). The electric Golf is only available in the top SEL trim level.
Given the plug-in car’s anticipated November on-sale date, it’s unlikely the winning bidder will get his or her car before everyone else, either.
2015 Volkswagen e-GolfWhen it does go on sale to the public, the e-Golf will initially be offered only in California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and the District of Columbia.
The auction is apparently open to people living outside these states, although Volkswagen notes that only dealers certified to sell the e-Golf can perform maintenance on the car.
Offering green cars for charity appears to be an emerging trend.

Last week, Toyota announced that it could give away one of its hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles as part of a fundraising effort for the Environmental Media Association.
Tickets are currently available online, albeit only to California residents.
Unlike Volkswagen–which can count on a flexible electricity infrastructure that makes public charging stations or home charging feasible almost everywhere–Toyota is aware that only the Golden State currently has any hydrogen fueling infrastructure to speak of.
