2009 Fisker Karma
On Tuesday Fisker Automotive announced that they were selected to receive a $528.7 million loan from the US government. Considered part of the ATVM loan program, the money will be used to develop an assembly plant to construct affordable electric cars in the United States. It is expected to create 5000 jobs and save 821 million gallons of gas and 8 million tons of CO2 through 2016.
The program, called NINA, seeks to design and develop Fisker’s next generation plug-in hybrid vehicle that has a goal price of $39,000 after a $7500 tax credit.
“This conditional loan represents a significant step in America’s future,” said Henrik Fisker, CEO. “With it Fisker Automotive can rapidly develop affordable clean cars that satisfy our passion for driving and help restore the US as an auto industry leader.”
Currently Fisker is working on the launch of its current $89,500 extended range electric sports car called the Karma. The car is expected to go into production in May 2010, and is being built in Finland.
The beautiful Karma does 0 to 60 in under 6 seconds, offers 50 miles all electric range and is said to get 67 MPG combined on the yet to be approved EPA measurement method.
