There is speculation about Capri as the model name for the ID.5 offshoot
Ford is reinventing itself in Europe. The manufacturer is eliminating well-known names such as Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo to make room for new electric models. The new Explorer EV, which was presented in March 2023, already gives a foretaste. And another electric SUV is expected to follow next year. We’ve now received new spy photos showing a camouflaged prototype being tested on public roads.
As early as 2022, Ford announced its EV program for Europe for the next two years, which includes a total of three new vehicles. The biggest new addition to the trio can be seen in the attached images and the vehicle is provisionally referred to as a sports crossover.
In terms of dimensions, it will be above the Explorer EV and the Mustang Mach-E . In addition, a fully electric version of the Puma is also expected to come onto the market next year and take the position of an entry-level model.
However, Ford is not alone with its electrification strategy. The company has an ongoing partnership with Volkswagen for this purpose . That’s why Ford is using the MEB architecture, which was already used as the basis for the Explorer EV.
The sporty crossover is also based on this platform, and judging from what we see here, the new model will be about the same size as the VW ID.5. However, Ford’s version of the EV SUV is rumored to have higher ground clearance and – as we can see in these shots – a more sloping roofline at the rear.
As far as the interior is concerned, you can expect a mix of VW and Ford components. However, with a high degree of independence. So the Explorer EV already has a completely different interior layout than the ID.4 , which gives a hint of what we can expect from the larger model too. By the way, “Capri” has been a name that has been floating around in the media for some time.
The vehicle is scheduled to come onto the market sometime next year and will be produced at Ford’s Cologne plant. It is part of the company’s ambitious strategy to have nine fully electric vehicles in its range by the end of next year. Five of these nine models will be light commercial vehicles.
