GOP Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich may have jibed earlier this week that you can’t fit a gun rack in a 2012 Chevrolet Volt, but after he was proven wrong by a resourceful Volt owner, it got us thinking.
What else can you fit in a Chevy Volt?
Here’s five things you should easily be able to fit in the back, ranging from the practical to the downright silly.
1: Full Size Bicycles
Like any other hatchback, the Chevy Volt can easily accommodate a full-sized bicycle when its rear seats are folded flat.
In fact, with the rear seats folded flat, two full-size bicycles can be accommodated, along with the associated accouterments you’ll need for a fun Sunday afternoon ride.
If you need to carry more than one passenger, several tailgate and roof-mounted cycle carriers are available, while those on the look out for even more cycle carrying capacity can opt for a tow hitch for a small bicycle trailer or hitch-mounted carrier.
2: Sports Equipment
Be it ice hockey, football, soccer or something more exotic like underwater basket-weaving, the Volt’s 10.6 cubic feet of capacity should more than easily swallow your sports equipment.
And for the curious, that also includes a weekend’s worth of hunting equipment, including tent, ammunition, guns, clothing and beer keg.

Put the rear seats down, and the Volt’s 18 cubic feet of luggage space should accommodate enough sports equipment for a whole sports team.
3: Lots of Shopping
Think more mainstream, and the Volt’s high load bay floor makes a perfect place for the weekly shopping trip, be it from the local Costco or fair-trade organic superstore.
Thanks to optional extras like load bay organizers and cargo nets, your shopping should stay upright and securely held during your trip home from the store.
Of course, it isn’t just shopping either. Everything from Ikea furniture to large items like widescreen televisions should fit snugly in the Volt when its rear seats are folded down.
4: Several Cute, Toe-Licking Dogs
Remember the cute dog from Chevrolet’s early ad for the Chevy Volt Concept? The dog that would help you save the environment by replacing your usual bath with a dog-lick wash?
Based on some guess work, we’d like to guess you could fit at least three bulldogs comfortably in the back of the Volt in appropriately-sized dog carriers. Put the seat down, and we’re sure you could fit a whole litter.
However, if you’re more of a Great Dane person, we think you might struggle due to the Volt’s high load-bay floor, so we think only small to medium breeds would be comfortable in the Volt.
5: Newt Gingrich’s Campaign Gear
Mr. Gingrich might be frustrated that the Chevy Volt doesn’t come with a gun rack as standard, but it could easily swallow enough campaign posters, signs and paraphernalia that it could accompany him on his nationwide campaign trail.

It might be smaller than a campaign bus, but with an all-electric range around town it could save the Gingrich campaign some serious money on fuel costs.
And if last week’s Gingrich campaign bus breakdown is anything to go by, it could be more reliable too.
Anything else?
We’ll admit that we had a fair bit of fun coming up with those two last suggestions — but what do you think a Chevy Volt owner should put in their Volt?
