People buy green cars for fuel efficiency, but that’s often far from their only good quality.
Consumer Reports released its “Best New-Car Value” list yesterday, and there are plenty of hybrids and fuel-efficient gasoline cars on it.
The magazine named the 2014 Toyota Prius hybrid best overall automotive value.
This is the second year the Prius has topped the Consumer Reports list–which highlights those cars the magazine feels give buyers the best “bang for the buck”–and the hybrid also took top honors in the Compact/Subcompact Cars category.
Regarding the decision, Consumer Reports automotive editor Rik Paul said the Prius has the best observed fuel economy of any non plug-in car the magazine has tested–at 44 mpg overall–and that its five-year cost of ownership equates to just 47 cents a mile.

Toyota, in fact, should be quite pleased with several of the results on the list.
In addition to the Prius clinching Best Overall Value, the 2014 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Limited was named the best value in the Large Cars category, while the 2014 Lexus ES 300h topped the Luxury Car list.
Subaru too had an impressive showing: Its  2014 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Premium sedan was named the best value in the Midsized Cars category, while the 2014 Forester 2.5i Premium crossover took the top spot in the Small SUVs category.
Last month, the 2014 Forester was also named Best Car To Buy 2014 by The Car Connection, and Subaru’s compact crossover has received several other honors since its launch last spring.
Mazda also racked up a pair of best-value honors. The 2014 Mazda 5 Grand Touring was named the best value in the Wagons/Minivans category, while the 2014 MX-5 Miata Grand Touring got the nod in the Sports Cars/Convertibles category.
The vehicle named Worst New-Car Value, incidentally, was the 2014 Nissan Armada Platinum full-size sport-utility vehicle.
Now there’s an odd couple: the quintessential hybrid, the Prius, alongside the gigantic Armada truck-based SUV.
