Mercedes-Benz revealed back in May that it would launch a plug-in hybrid version of its all-new C-Class in the fall of 2015.
Further details of that car have now emerged, including drivetrain specifics and its efficiency figures in European testing.
Mercedes sources have revealed to Autocar that the new car will use a downsized 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine to supply the bulk of the vehicle’s power.
This produces 208 horsepower, while a 67hp electric motor supplies an extra surge of power, as well as acting as a generator for regenerative braking and propelling the car emissions-free in EV mode.
Electric range on the European cycle is 32 miles, so bank on 20-30 percent less electric range by the time the C-Class plug-in is put through EPA testing procedures. A more accurate estimate is hard to make right now, as the size of the C-Class battery pack is still unknown.

CO2 emissions are estimated to be around the 50 g/km mark, which equates to 109 mpg combined–again under European test conditions.
Various tweaks will be made to the new C-Class to ensure it achieves suitably lofty economy figures. An active grille shutter to improve aerodynamics will feature, while the car’s charging port is likely to be mounted in the rear bumper, as it is on the S-Class plug-in hybrid.
Autocar says the interior should remain largely standard, though Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment system will likely have dedicated menu options appropriate to the car’s hybrid drivetrain.
Mercedes makes no bones that the C350 Plug-In Hybrid will be a cheap car–sources suggest it could cost more than the top-end gasoline C400.
Those not convinced by the plug-in hybrid C-Class will also be able to opt for a diesel version, with a 2.1-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel under the hood. No release date has yet been confirmed for the diesel model.
