How fast can an electric car get around the iconic Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany?
Until recently, the fastest official time for an electric car stood at 9 minutes and 52 seconds. Recorded last year in a BMW Mini E racing car, it was the first time an all-electric car had completed the course in under 10 minutes.
But French automaker Peugeot has now snatched the title from the its nearby rival with its EX1 all-electric sportscar concept and a time of just 9 minutes, 1.338 seconds.
While the time is still a long way from the 6 minutes and 47.50 second road legal vehicle record set in 2010 by Marc Basseng in a Pagani Zonda R, the EX1’s time is hardly slow.

In fact, the EX1’s lap time beats the 9 minute 59 second lap time of Jeremy Clarkson, the electric-car hating host of BBC Top Gear, who achieved that time in 2004 driving a Jaguar S-Type Diesel.
Sadly, Peugeot doesn’t plan to launch the EX1 as a production car, leaving us wondering what it will do with the 250 kilowatt drivetrain.
Let’s hope it is fast, electric and lots of fun. And willing to defend the title, which we think will get broken some time this year.
