With four-figure sales for both its all-electric Chevrolet Bolt EV and the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid, GM probably led April’s plug-in electric car sales.
The “probably” comes because Tesla refuses to release its deliveries broken down either by month or by country, meaning there’s no data to compare.
GM’s 3,102 deliveries—1,807 Volts, 1,292 Bolt EVs, 7 discontinued Spark EVs, and 2 stray discontinuedCadillac ELR coupes—comfortably beat the 1,063 Nissan Leafs sold last month.

The largest U.S. car company’s year-to-date plug-in sales totals after four months for those three vehicles are 7,370 and 4,384, along with 7 ELRs.
Those contrast to 4,340 Leafs for Nissan, which will unveil its all-new and longer-range 2018 Nissan Leaf this September.
More than that, the Bolt EV’s 1,292 sales comfortably beat those of the aging Leaf (at 1,063) with half its range, even if they’re not what electric-car advocates had hoped for out of the longest-range mass-priced electric car on the market.
2017 Ford Fusion Energi
Another high-volume car with a plug is the Toyota Prius Prime, which sold 1,819 units in April, just squeaking past the Volt’s 1,807.
The Volt is still ahead in year-to-date sales after four months, however, at 7,370 to the Prime’s 6,165.
We continue to hear complaints, however, that Toyota distributors and dealers outside California tell buyers that the Prius Prime isn’t available or refuse to order it, despite the company’s claim that it’s a 50-state car.

As for Ford’s deliveries of its C-Max and Fusion Energi plug-in hybrids, they’re stable or lower this year than last year. The Fusion Energi mid-size sedan in particular has logged just a single four-digit sales figure after doing so in 10 out of 12 months last year.
The plug-in Fusion sold 905 units and the compact five-door C-Max Energi hatchback logged 720—almost on par with last year—for four-month totals of 3,350 and 2,494 respectively.
The BMW i3 number came in at 516, reflecting the continuing transition to a new higher-range version for 2017. Its year-to-date total is now 1,919 cars.
2017 BMW i3
In other reported April electric-car sales, 307 Volkswagen e-Golf hatchbacks were delivered, bringing the year’s total to 1,274 just before deliveries of the updated, 125-mile 2017 VW e-Golf start.
Its sister company within VW Group, Audi, delivered 301 of its A3 e-tron Sportback compact hatchbacks. That brings the year’s total so far to 1,502, or more than 10 percent of all A3 sales.
Lower-volume plug-in vehicles
The other German compact hatchback electric car, the Mercedes-Benz B250e, logged 66 sales—its best in 13 months—for a total in 2017 to date of 225.
Ford’s Focus Electric, now updated with a 115-mile range, only delivered 125 units after far higher totals in February and March. Its year-to-date number is 816.
2016 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid
Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid plug-in hybrid SUV sales continued strong, at 185 in April and 609 for the four months to date.
Mercedes also sold 81 more S550e plug-in hybrid large sedans and 36 GLE 550e plug-in SUVs, while another 23 BMW i8 coupes found buyers.
Year-to-date totals for those are three are 247, 194, and 180.
Two more Mitsubishi i-MiEVs and three Smart ForTwo Electric Drive two-seaters were sold as well. On the plug-in hybrid front, two Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrids and three Mercedes-Benz C350e sedans found buyers.
Finally, Toyota sold 106 Mirais and Honda delivered 34 Clarity Fuel Cells, bringing the year-to-date totals for the pair of Japanese hydrogen fuel-cell sedans to 417 and 126 respectively.
