2015 Chevrolet Volt
The Chevrolet Volt sold 150 units in Canada in July, by far its best showing this year. Volume was up both from June’s 120 sales, and year-over-year from last July’s 132 customers.
With Tesla sales historically slower in the first month of a quarter, the Volt may have ended the Model S’s seven-month dominance of plug-in electric vehicle sales in Canada.

A total of 4,500 Volts have now been sold throughout the country (4,800 if used imports are included), so Chevrolet might even be able to cross the 5,000 level before the second-generation Volt premieres.
Nissan sold 94 Leafs in July, down slightly both from June’s 101, and from 117 in the year-ago period.
While Volt sales have dropped more than one-third this year, the Leaf has held steady, perhaps in part because the next-generation vehicle hasn’t yet made its auto show debut.

Holding steady, however, hasn’t been enough to keep the Leaf second overall in Canadian plug-in electric vehicle sales – it recently dropped to third place behind the Model S.
Fremont’s fossil-fuel fighter found a remarkable 242 new buyers in June, just 8 shy of the one-month plug-in electric vehicle record it set in March. The Tesla Model S now owns three of the top six sales months for electric vehicles in the country, the other three belonging to the Chevy Volt.
And through the first half of 2015, the Model S outsold the Volt and Leaf combined (984 to 913).

Remaining in the luxury sector, BMW sold 43 i-series vehicles in July, a slight drop from the 49 in June.
As pointed out last month by perceptive reader Naoko, BMW doesn’t distinguish between i3 and i8 sales, so we’ll have to wait for the vehicle registration data next month to determine the July split.
In recent months, the i3 and i8 have sold in a roughly 2:1 ratio, so we can see if July’s numbers follow the same pattern.

Mitsubishi sold 8 i-MiEVs in July, which were joined on Canadian roads by 3 Porsche Spyders, 2 Cadillac ELRs, and a McLaren P1 supercar on Canada’s streets.
As always, delivery data for the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Ford C-Max Energi and Ford Fusion Energi is not available, with the companies no longer providing sales breakdowns, and vehicle registrars not distinguishing between plug-in and conventional hybrid versions.

From a Ford representative: “I have looked into this and unfortunately we are not inclined to provide this level of detail for Canada. The numbers are very small, as you might imagine.”

Mercedes-Benz sold another 35 Smart Electric Drives in Canada in June, up from 25 in May. BMW sold 17 i8’s in June (it had also sold 25 in May) and Kia’s 18 Soul EV sales were enough to cross 100 total Canadian deliveries.

With the exception of a handful of highly committed buyers in other provinces, these three models are essentially sold only in the three incentive-offering provinces of British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec.
Finally, three owners each of the Chevy Spark and Ford Focus Electric drove their new vehicles onto Canadian roads.
