Sales of plug-in electric cars in September chugged along steadily, with consistent sales from the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid and a stronger number for the Nissan Leaf battery-electric car.
Chevrolet logged 2,031 deliveries of its Volt hatchback, likely now almost all the new second-generation model, raising the year-to-date total to 16,326.
That’s well ahead of last year’s pace, and it brings total Volt sales in the U.S. since December 2010 to 105,076.

Nissan Leaf sales improved to their best monthly number since last December.
A total of 1,316 Leafs were delivered in September, bringing the nine-month number to 9,238, though that pace is still down on last year’s pace.
As always, because Tesla does not break out its quarterly delivery totals by country or month, we do not have comparable sales data for the Silicon Valley carmaker.

That said, however, Tesla said it delivered roughly 24,500 electric cars from July through September: 15,800 Model S sedans and 8,700 Model X utility vehicles.
That number is considerably higher than last quarter’s, and the company said it is sticking with its previous guidance of 50,000 cars delivered for the second half of this year.
Other high-volume vehicles—which we presently define as more than 300 units a month—are the BMW i3, the Chevrolet Spark EV, and the Volkswagen e-Golf on the battery-electric front.

The volume list also includes three plug-in hybrids: the Energi versions of the Ford Fusion mid-size sedan and Ford C-Max compact tall hatchback, plus the Audi A3 e-tron.
Two new and eagerly awaited plug-in vehicles will start to log sales sometime during October, November, or December.
They are the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV electric car, with its rated 238-mile battery range, and the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid, with 25 miles of electric range.

The predecessor to the Prius Prime, the discontinued Prius Plug-In Hybrid, logged 4 sales of leftover vehicles, bringing its total for the year to 52, all leftover cars from the 2015 (and perhaps even 2014) model years.
The plug-in Prius, however, sold more than 50,000 units though over its four-year life in the U.S. (and 72,000 globally).
Lower-volume battery-electric vehicles whose sales contribute to the overall plug-in electric car sales totals include the

The makers of the Fiat 500e compliance car, the Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid, and the Kia Soul EV have consistently refused to release the sales figures for those vehicles.
This report will be updated throughout today and tomorrow as more sales figures are released by automakers.
