Sales of plug-in electric cars last month continued at pretty much the same level as in May, with few notable gainers or losers among the high-volume entries.
While the Nissan Leaf electric car and the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid had run neck-and-neck in total sales last year, the Leaf has now fallen substantially behind.
Since March, the Volt has averaged 2,000 sales a month while the Leaf has reached only half that.

In June, Chevrolet delivered 1,937 Volts and Nissan sold 1,096 Leafs, bringing their half-year totals to 9,808 and 5,793 respectively.
The Volt has now pulled slightly ahead in units sold since December 2010 (when both cars went on sale), and will likely cross 100,000 units sold in the U.S. next month.
It’s now at 98,558, versus the Leaf’s 95,384.

Silicon Valley maker Tesla Motors refuses to report monthly sales or break out its quarterly global deliveries by country, so we don’t know how many cars it delivered last month in the U.S.
It did, however, release its global second-quarter deliveries during the dead period over the long U.S. holiday weekend.
Tesla said it had delivered 14,370 units from April through June, below its previous target of 17,000, though it claimed that it is now consistently producing 2,000 Model S and Model X electric cars a week.

Ford’s pair of Energi plug-in hybrids sold at a stronger pace last month than in several months prior.
The strong number of 1,700 Fusion Energi sedans was the highest monthly total for the mid-size plug-in hybrid since June 2014.
Even the lagging C-Max Energi compact five-door tall hatchback logged 630 sales, its best number since the prior October.
2017 Ford Fusion Energi
In the absence of numbers from Tesla, that lets Ford claim to have sold more plug-in vehicles last month than any other maker.
As for other higher-volume plug-in cars, 608 BMW i3 battery-electric and range-extended electric hatchbacks were sold in June, bringing the half-year total to 2,880.
The 2017 i3, which will launch later this year, will offer a range of 120 miles, roughly half again as high as the current car’s rated range.

Whether an expanded range will boost sales remains to be seen; it certainly hasn’t helped the current Nissan Leaf.
Volkswagen, meanwhile, sold 248 e-Golfs, bringing the half-year total to 1,468. That car too will get a longer-range version, but not until next spring or summer.
Finally, Audi delivered 353 A3 e-tron plug-in hybrid hatchbacks, bringing its six-month total to 1,942.

The only other plug-in electric car whose sales have exceeded 1,000 over the first six months is the Chevrolet Spark EV battery-electric minicar.
Its June deliveries of 359 units bring the six-month total to 1,779 vehicles.
The Spark EV doesn’t need to worry about increased range, however. Late this year or early next year, it will be replaced in the Chevy lineup by the 200-mile Chevrolet Bolt EV.
The only other compliance car whose sales are reported, the Ford Focus Electric, has seen its numbers tail off this year, presumably anticipating its range boost to 100 miles or more (from the current 76 miles) later this year.
Ford delivered 54 of the battery-electric compact hatchback, bringing half-year sales to 446.
2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE550e Plug-In Hybrid
While we don’t yet have June sales numbers for the luxury plug-in hybrids from Porsche or Volvo, every other electric or plug-in hybrid on the market has sold fewer than 1,000 units from January through June.
Last month’s sales for those cars include 169 BMW i8 plug-in hybrid gull-wing coupes, 94 Cadillac ELR range-extended luxury electric coupes, 53 Smart Electric Drive minicars, 44 Mercedes B-Class electric hatchbacks, and 19 Mercedes GLE550e plug-in hybrid SUVs (a new entry this month).
Round it out are a handful of Mercedes S-Class (4) and leftover Toyota Prius (11) plug-in hybrids and 4 Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric minicars.
Fiat and Kia too refuse to release sales for their 500e electric minicar and Kia Soul EV electric tall hatchback.

A trip to the seaside is the highlight of a summer holiday for many. Travelling with an electric car adds a new dimension to the experience but requires more careful planning. Several Czechs have shared their experiences of a holiday with an electric car. We, too, embarked on a journey from Prague to Zadar, Croatia, covering over 900 km.
