Nearly a week ago, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Porsche CEO, Michael Macht, announced plans to produce an all-electric sports car. He recently reiterated that sentiment in the German magazine Welt am Sonntag. Macht says the company is working “intensively” on an EV, but that it will take time for such a model to make it to market, “with a reasonable reach, achieving the same handling characteristics of a gasoline engine.”
He went on to say that he expects Porsche’s first EVs to be on the roads within the next five to ten years, but that wasn’t his only optimistic prediction.
“If the world economy picks up again, we can well imagine unit sales of 150,000 Porsche cars per year,” he said. That’s more than a 50,000 unit increase over sales in the 2007/2008 fiscal year.
Macht believes increased sales will have to come from brand new models as opposed to the four (Boxster, Cayman, Cayenne, 911) currently on the market. According to Autocar, Porsche would likely look to parent company, Volkswagen, for inspiration by way of the VW BlueSport roadster concept or a crossover similar to the “Roxster” concept, which would be based on the Audi Q5. A Porsche Panamera coupe is another possibility.
As long as they all drive like Porsches, and Macht sticks to his time line for EVs, we don’t care where the inspiration comes from.
