Toyota will recall 109,000 2012 through 2014 model-year Prius V hybrids to address a software issue that could cause the vehicles to slow or stall suddenly.
The software glitch is associated with two components: the motor/generator control electronic control unit, and the hybrid control electronic control unit.
A fault can cause hardware in both of those units to overheat, triggering a fail-safe mode that limits functionality.

In some cases, the hybrid system may shut down entirely, resulting in a complete loss of power that brings the car to a stop, Toyota says.
The fault in the control units will also trigger dashboard warning lights.
This appears that it could be similar to a software issue that led to the recall of 700,000 2010-2014 Prius Liftback models in February 2014.
2014 Toyota Prius VPrius V owners will be notified of when to take their cars to dealers to have the software updated, free of charge.
Owners can contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331, or visit Toyota’s recall website and enter their vehicle’s VIN for more information.

This is the second recall this year for the Prius V tall wagon.
In January, Toyota recalled 5,000 2014 and 2015 models to correct a flaw in the airbag occupant classification system (OCS).
2012 Toyota Prius VThe OCS determines whether the front seat is occupied and, if so, whether the passenger is of sufficient weight to require airbag protection. If those criteria aren’t met, the passenger airbag is shut off.
The improperly-calibrated units may not have deployed airbags when needed, requiring a software fix.

The Prius V is the largest of the three remaining models in the Prius “family,” which also includes the original Prius Liftback and Prius C subcompact.
Toyota ended sales of the Prius Plug-In Hybrid in June, though that model will return sometime after an all-new fourth-generation Toyota Prius is unveiled this fall as a 2016 model.
