The Ferrari 458 Spider is not a slow car. That sounds like a statement of the obvious, but when you see it left for dust by another vehicle, as in the video above, you might have wondered.
The 4.5-liter, V-8-engined Ferrari has no answer for the Concept_One, the thousand-plus horsepower supercar from Croatian builder Rimac.
Currently on a tour of the Middle East, the impromptu drag race was set up to demonstrate just how quickly electric cars can go. With an electric motor for each wheel and the combined hammer blows of 1,073 horsepower and 1,180 pounds-feet of torque, the 562-horsepower Ferrari was only ever going to come off second best.
Officially, the Concept_One will reach 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds, to the Ferrari’s 3.4.
And while the Concept_One is rather more expensive than the Ferrari–$980,000, to be precise–it’s every inch the thoroughbred supercar. Really, it’s more of a rival for Bugatti’s spectacular Veyron, itself a million-dollar, thousand-horsepower machine.
A large 98 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery should give the Concept_One a 372-mile range, too. When you’re not racing Ferraris, at any rate.
But there’s another message here–that if you have plenty of money to spend (like the buyers Rimac is presumably wooing in the Middle East) then gasoline power isn’t your only option for supercar speed any more.
If you want the pinnacle of road car speed, it could well be an electric vehicle on your list…
