And the hybrids just keep on coming. Earlier this morning we wrote that BMW will launch a line of front-wheel-drive hybrids in 2014.
Now, the British magazine AutoExpress suggests that a new generation of the Ford GT supercar will also offer hybrid-electric drive.
Competition for Porsche
If so, it will likely compete with the upcoming Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid two-seater, which provides not only a 500-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-8 to drive the rear wheels, but an electric motor powering the front wheels for additional horsepower and performance.
The 918 Spyder offers up to 16 miles of electric range, as well as 0-to-62-mph acceleration of 3.2 seconds, and top speed of 198 miles per hour. It’s also rated at 78 miles per gallon on the European test cycle.
Porsche launched that vehicle as a concept at 2010 Geneva Motor Show last March. Public reception was sufficiently positive that the company was able to gather 1,000 or more deposits for a production version of the car, which it green-lighted for production last July.
New-generation GT?
Earlier this month, word came down that there might well be a new generation of GT40-inspired supercar.
The previous Ford GT, a retro-styled model alluding strongly to the design of the famous GT-40 that raced in the late 1960s, was sold from 2005 to 2007. A few hundred copies were built and sold.
Supercar contenders
According to AutoExpress, the new Ford GT will feature a supercharged V-8 driving the rear wheels, plus electric power for the fronts. Total power is said to be around 600 horsepower, putting the new hybrid supercar in the same category as the Ferrari 458 Italia, the new McLaren MP4-12C, and upcoming models from Lamborghini and Audi.
Plug-in hybrid vehicles with 15 or more miles of all-electric range will allow supercar makers to sell cars to drivers who want to be able to use them within the centers of some European cities that are expected to institute zero-emission zones in their cores.
