If you’re looking for a car to take drag racing, you might want to consider a Tesla Model S electric sedan.
Drag Times posted the video above of a race between a 2013 Tesla Model S P85 and a 2014 Corvette equipped with the Z51 performance package, which took place at Palm Beach International Raceway.
An electric luxury sedan and a V-8 sports car seem like an odd match, but the Model S is hardly a slouch.
According to Tesla, the Model S P85–equipped with the larger 85-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack plus a few other upgrades–develops 416 horsepower, and will do 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds.
The Corvette’s 6.2-liter gasoline V-8 is rated at 455 hp–or 460 hp with the optional performance exhaust–and Z51-equipped cars can make the run to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds.
The car facing off against the Model S was equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission, rather than the available seven-speed manual. Which exhaust system it had was not specified.
So which car won?
The Model S got the jump on the Corvette off the line, but the Chevy sports car came close to catching up by mid-track. It wasn’t enough, though: the Model S won by 0.235 seconds.

So that’s what happens when a Model S faces off against a Corvette. How about a race between a Model S and … another Model S?
A Model S vs. Model S race took place earlier this week, very possibly the quietest drag race ever.
While there may have been an almost total lack of noise, there was no lack of speed: Both cars covered the quarter mile in the 12-second range.
And these are just the latest drag-race appearances for the Tesla Model S.
The electric sedan also laid waste to a Dodge Viper SRT10 convertible, turning in quarter-mile times in the 12.371-second range in the process.
In the hands of Automobile Magazine, it also beat a BMW M5, a benchmark in the luxury-performance sedan category.
Each time it makes a pass, the Model S proves that electric cars don’t have to be slow.
Haven’t heard much about that old “golf-cart” meme lately, have we?
