Tesla Says “G’Day” to Australian East Coast With 1,864 Mile TrekTesla Says “G’Day” to Australian East Coast With 1,864 Mile Trek

Eighteen months after Australian Tesla roadster early adopter Simon Hackett broke the world record for the longest distance travelled in a production electric vehicle Tesla Australia is planning a 3,000 kilometer (1,864 mile) trek along the country’s east coast
After receiving official governmental approval in January this year  to sell its 2011 Roadster 2.5 in Australia, Tesla has opened up its first Australian showroom in Sydney.
But with a huge country and only one main showroom, Tesla needed a way to bring the car to potential customers. A road trip, of which we know Tesla is so fond, seemed like the obvious choice.
Named the “Oz Goes Electric Tour”, the event will kick off on March 16th at 10 a.m., when a Tesla Roadster will leave Melbourne and head north, stopping at locations in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland en-route.
Tesla hopes the event will let Australians see the super sexy sportscar for the first time and encourage a nation in love with the automobile into a cleaner, more environmentally responsible ride.
But with the Australian specification Tesla Roadster 2.5 starting at a whopping $206,188 AUS ($205,000 US) we’re not sure that many down under will buy it.
Then again, since Australia’s tough laws prohibiting the driving of left-hand drive cars on its right-hand drive roads and look harshly on any ‘grey import’ vehicle, Australian fans of the two-seat sportscar really do only have two choices: buying new, or waiting a long time for a used example.
Time, it seems, will tell.
