Electric-car startup Tesla Motors attracts huge interest, lots of controversy, and truly passionate customers and followers.
For a company that’s been around only a little more than 10 years, it’s got a lot of history.
Now, a video from Bloomberg Business distills that history down into a mere two minutes and 20 seconds.

Starting with the company’s founding by two men who are not current CEO Elon Musk, the narrative moves briskly and factually through key points.
The first car put on sale by the fledging carmaker was the Tesla Roadster, only 2,500 copies of which were ever intended to be built.

The video accepts as fact the notion that Tesla had a handshake deal with Google to rescue it if cash ran out early in 2013; Musk subsequently disputed that report.
A series of three battery fires, followed by Tesla’s design modifications to armor the pack mounted under the floorpan, are covered.

So are Tesla’s construction of its own DC fast-charging network across the U.S. and in many other countries, and the start of construction on its battery gigafactory in Nevada.
The video notes that Tesla’s next vehicle will be the Model X electric SUV, though it doesn’t address that vehicle’s several delays in starting production.

The video focuses largely on the business aspect of Tesla Motors, including its 2009 deal with Toyota–hardly unexpected from a business-media empire like Bloomberg.
And it doesn’t touch on some of the flashpoint issues around Tesla, including Musk’s habit of tweeting out key information, its history of product delays, and the carbon footprint of cars run on grid power.

Overall, as canned history, we give Bloomberg a good score for condensing down a lot of material and not getting anything fundamentally wrong.
We’re just waiting for the feature film–and trying to figure out who will play Elon Musk.
