Toyota has reached yet another hybrid-production milestone since launching the original Prius in Japan in 1997.
Nine months after building its 8-millionth hybrid, Toyota says it has now sold just over 9 million hybrids globally.
The build date for that 9-millionth hybrid was actually April 30, so the company has likely passed that mark by a significant margin since then.

The total includes hybrids from both the main Toyota brand and the Lexus luxury brand.
Lexus by itself delivered its 1-millionth hybrid in April, 11 years after it first began selling them.
This is the second time in a row Toyota has increased its global hybrid-production total by 1 million units in less than a year.

Toyota claims its hybrids have saved a combined 67 million tons of carbon-dioxide emissions as of April 30.
The company currently sells 33 hybrid models in more than 90 global markets.

That includes the redesigned fourth-generation Prius that went on sale late last year.
In the U.S., Toyota also continues to offer the Prius C subcompact and Prius V tall wagon, and it will launch the 2017 Prius Prime plug-in hybrid here later this year.
It also sells hybrid versions of the Camry and Avalon sedans, and the Highlander and RAV4 crossovers.

Lexus sells the CT 200h hatchback, as well as hybrid versions of the ES, GS, and LS sedans, and the RX and NX crossovers.
The 2018 LC 500h—a hybrid version of Lexus’ new flagship luxury coupe—will also arrive soon.

In other markets, Toyota sells a wide variety of hybrid models—from the European-market Yaris Hybrid to a hybrid version of the Esquire minivan sold in Japan.
Last year, Toyota added a hybrid variant of the smaller Japanese-market Sienta minivan, and Corolla and Levin hybrid models for the Chinese markets.
With so many hybrids on sale worldwide, how long will it take for Toyota to reach the 10 million-unit mark?
