Since the first-generation Prius originally went on sale in Japan in 1997, Toyota has dominated the hybrid sector.
Less than a year after selling its 7 millionth hybrid, Toyota has passed another significant milestone.
The Japanese carmaker now says that it has sold more than 8 million hybrid cars globally.

Toyota says those cars have saved a combined 58 million tons of carbon-dioxide emissions as of July 31.
The company currently sells 30 distinct hybrid models in more than 90 global markets.
That includes models sold under the main Toyota brand, as well as the Lexus luxury brand.

Toyota’s U.S. hybrid lineup includes four Prius variants: the original Prius Liftback, Prius Plug-In Hybrid (now out of production), Prius C subcompact, and Prius V tall wagon.
There are also hybrid versions of the Camry and Avalon sedans, and the Highlander crossover.
Lexus sells the CT 200h hatchback, as well as hybrid versions of the ES, GS, and LS sedans, and RX and NX crossovers.

Outside the U.S., models vary from a Yaris Hybrid sold in Europe to the Crown Royal Saloon Hybrid, a big rear-wheel drive luxury sedan sold in Japan.
Recent additions to the global Toyota hybrid lineup include hybrid powertrain options for the Japan-only Esquire and Sienta minivans.
Toyota will also sell a RAV4 Hybrid in the U.S., beginning later this year.

However, the most anticipated upcoming new mode is almost certainly the next-generation Toyota Prius.
The fourth generation of Toyota’s original hybrid will debut September 8 in Las Vegas.
Little has been confirmed so far, but a boost in fuel economy is expected, along with an electric range of 30 to 35 miles for the plug-in hybrid model.

The next Prius will also use the new “TNGA” global modular platform, and may offer all-wheel drive for the first time.
Styling is expected to maintain the basic form of the current model, but with more expressive elements to entice a wider cross section of consumers.
That will help Toyota maintain its dominance of the hybrid market, and continue on the path to 9 million global sales.
