It seems like the current-generation Audi A3 went on sale only yesterday but we already have our first look at the car’s mid-cycle update.
That’s because the current A3 went on sale overseas back in 2012, only appearing in the United States two years later.
The updates are significant and include revised styling for the exterior as well as a new engine for the regular gasoline model. Audi has also finally replaced its aging 6-speed dual-clutch transmission with a newer 7-speed unit.

Updated Audi A3 e-tron Sportback (European spec)
You’ll spot some tweaks made to the lights at both ends plus a revised grille that’s more pronounced than before. The interior has also been updated with some new tech features including a digital instrument cluster (likely as an option) and some electronic driver aids.
The changes affect the complete A3 range including the A3 e-tron Sportback plug-in hybrid. We don’t have full details yet as only the specifications for the European market have been released.
However, right now it looks like there will be no change to the powertrain of the A3 e-tron Sportback. The current model pairs a turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder with an electric motor to deliver a combined 204 horsepower. An 8.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery provides an EPA-rated electric-only range of 16 miles.

Updated Audi A3 e-tron Sportback (European spec)
In a press release, Audi mentions that the updated A3 e-tron Sportback will feature a function for programming times for charging and turning on the climate settings.
Buyers opting for the gasoline A3 can look forward to Audi’s latest turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, which debuted in the latest A4. In the updated A3 the engine delivers 190 horsepower. This same engine also powers the sporty S3 where it delivers upwards of 310 hp.
At this point it’s not clear if the updated A3 will offer a diesel option in the U.S. The current A3 no longer offers a diesel option as its turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine hasn’t been certified by the EPA and CARB. You’ll recall Audi nixed plans to offer a diesel engine in its latest A4, so it’s unlikely we’ll see one in the updated A3.
The updated A3 range goes on sale in Europe this summer. We’ll bring you an update as soon as details for the U.S. market are known.
